Bogota, also known as Sante Fe de Bogota or the Athens of the Americas, is the capital and largest city of Colombia. A picturesque and spacious city, Bogota is located on a high, fertile plateau in the E. Andes. The most interesting sights of the city are in the historic central neighborhood of La Candelaria. The Plaza de Bolivar is the main square in the city, where the seat of both Federal and local governments are housed. The buildings in the neighboring areas are built in the colonial style with open balconies. As you sit on the main square, you may see the First Cathedral, built back in the late 1500’s. A few steps away, you will find Bogota’s most breathtaking museum, the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum). Local guides will arrange day trips around Bogota, including a trip to the salt mines of Zipaquira, where you will find a whole cathedral built inside the salt mines! Another incredible place to visit is Monserrate, where you will find a modest church, with a marvelous panoramic view of the entire city. Don’t forget to pack your camera.
